The Buddha left his home and family to fight against the pain and suffering he saw we all were enduring. He succeeded in his battle to end suffering (Samsara) by giving us a path that ends pain and provides ultimate freedom. After he returned he embraced both his wife and son in his loving compassion.
According to Buddhist legend, Prince Siddhartha already had been shaken deeply by the realization he could not escape sickness, old age, and death. … She told Rahula to ask his father for his inheritance so that he would become king when Suddhodana died.
When Prince Siddhartha, the heir to the Shakya Kingdom, attained Buddhahood, He took His own son Rahula, His own half brothers Nanda and Ananda – all heirs to the Kingdom- as his disciples in to the order of Sangha. Therefore Shakya Kingdom lost all it’s heirs during the life time of King Shuddhodhana himself.

Kapilavastu was destroyed by the Kingdom of Kosala (c. 7th-5th centuries BCE), which had assumed control of the region, under their king Vidudabha (c. 6th century BCE) of the Baghochia Dynasty during the Buddha’s lifetime.
According to a well-known version, many aeons ago there lived a Brahman named (in some accounts) Sumedha, who realized that life is characterized by suffering and then set out to find a state beyond death. He retired to the mountains, where he became a hermit, practiced meditation, and gained yogic powers.
The Buddha refused to stop meditating until he had found supreme enlightenment. A central teaching that he achieved was that temptation can be overcome. He had gone from a life of privilege to overcoming the temptation of basic human needs.
Let the Dharma and the discipline that I have taught you be your teacher. All individual things pass away. Strive on, untiringly.” These were the Buddha’s last words.
The historical figure referred to as the Buddha (whose life is known largely through legend) was born on the northern edge of the Ganges River basin, an area on the periphery of the ancient civilization of North India, in what is today southern Nepal. He is said to have lived for 80 years.
In the 40-plus years of his life after enlightenment, the Buddha Shakayamuni is said to have recounted almost 554 past life stories, (called Jataka tales) of his prior existences.
Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī
Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī (Pali; Sanskrit Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī) was the foster-mother, step-mother and maternal aunt (mother’s sister) of the Buddha. In Buddhist tradition, she was the first woman to seek ordination for women, which she did from Gautama Buddha directly, and she became the first bhikkhuni (Buddhist nun).
Around 485 BCE, as Gautama Buddha lay dying, he had only his first and most faithful disciple, Ananda, by his side. He had eaten a hearty meal cooked by a blacksmith called Chunda and it had disagreed with him seriously. He was 80 years old and knew the end was near.

According to Buddhist tradition, the disciple Devadatta was the Buddha’s cousin and also brother to the Buddha’s wife, Yasodhara. Devadatta is said to have caused a split in the sangha by persuading 500 monks to leave the Buddha and follow him instead. This story of Devadatta is preserved in the Pali Tipitika.
