At first it might seem like the narrator of this book is third-person omniscient, since it sticks pretty closely to Margaret Hale’s point of view.

Maria Hale’s gruff but loyal maid, who sees Mrs. Hale’s marriage to Richard Hale as the great downfall of Mrs. Hale’s life.
Fanny being the same age as Margaret is still possible but I still peg her to be somewhere between 0-2 years old. That way Fanny is still younger (i.e immature) to Margaret (if that is what EG was indeed trying to portray). Fanny marries by the end of the book, when Margaret is 20.

North and South is, at its heart, two things: a social novel and a romance. Gaskell was inspired by her own youth spent in Manchester during the labor strikes that heavily affected mills. She sets this story in the fictional northern town of Milton, a crucial area in textile manufacturing.
Book 3, which was aired approximately 9 years after the brilliant book 2 North and South Movie was not up to par with the other two movies. Patrick Swayze only appears at the very beginning.
And the bright future is symbolized by Charles Main, Orry’s younger brother. He’s like Hamlet in that he can’t decide what to do after the war. Charles, vulnerable and brave, is played by Kyle Chandler of “Homefront.”
Summary: Based on a best-selling novel by John Jakes, North and South is a dramatic mini-series about two best friends and their families set against a backdrop of the American Civil War.

Manchester (the fictional Milton) grew from 50,000 in the 1780’s to over 300,000 by the 1840’s as people flocked to the cities to find work in the new factories and mills.
This is coupled with the facts that these tomes are often incredibly lengthy – North and South weighs in at 448 pages of small type in the Wordsworth edition, and takes over 18 hours to listen to in the Audible edition, beautifully read by Juliet Stevenson.

They gave her a taste of the feeling that she believed would be denied to her for ever” (2.22. 14). By the end of the book, the most important effect of Margaret’s newfound humility is that she’s finally able to see the goodness in John Thornton and marry him.
Hale’s diagnosis with a “deadly disease” (probably cancer) soon after the move. Margaret takes charge of most of the practical aspects of the move and then assumes charge of her mother’s illness, acting as an intermediary between the doctor and her parents.
Bell is also godfather to Frederick and Margaret. He is a jovial man in his sixties.
Margaret Hale: The protagonist, she is proud and spirited and very fond of her parents (especially her father). She is 18 years old at the start of the story, before she returns to Helstone, and has been living mainly with her aunt (Mrs. Shaw) and her cousin Edith in London since she was nine years old.
Hale finds himself unable to reaffirm his faith in the church doctrine and makes a final decision: he will give up his role as vicar — a role he anxiously felt he no longer had a moral right to hold. Once his mind is made up, his resolution is firm, despite the suffering and upheaval he knows this will cause.
