Yalu River, Chinese (Pinyin) Yalu Jiang or (Wade-Giles romanization) Ya-lü Chiang, Korean Amnok-kang, river of northeastern Asia that forms the northwestern boundary between North Korea and the Northeast region (Manchuria) of China. The Chinese provinces of Jilin and Liaoning are bordered by the river.
Even if China tried, it could not get more than 50,000 troops across the Yalu River, MacArthur promised, citing his G2’s intelligence estimate. In fact, by October 19, 260,000 CFF soldiers had already crossed into Korea.

Manchuria
Port Arthur, the deep-water port and Russian naval base at the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula in Manchuria, had been widely regarded as one of the most strongly fortified positions in the world.
Technically the war isn’t over, and has no “winner”. As far was why that is though, is mainly due to China. US, UN & South Korean forces pushed the North Korean Army all the way to the border with China, and that’s when China intervened.
The agreement created the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to separate North and South Korea, and allowed the return of prisoners. However, no peace treaty was ever signed, and the two Koreas are technically still at war, engaged in a frozen conflict.
Undeterred, General MacArthur ordered a bold offensive on 24 November to push right up to the Yalu River, which marked the border between North Korea and north-east China. He optimistically hoped this would finish the war and allow the troops “home by Christmas”.
• YALU (noun) Meaning: River in eastern Asia; rises in North Korea and flows southwest to Korea Bay (forming part of the border between North Korea and China)
70 YEARS AGO TODAY, THE SO-CALLED “FORGOTTEN WAR” BEGAN IN KOREA. … All told, more than five million people – more than half of them Korean civilians – died during the war. Why the “Forgotten War” label? Because the Korean War failed to generate the same fervor among Americans on the home front as did World War II.
After three years of a bloody and frustrating war, the United States, the People’s Republic of China, North Korea, and South Korea agree to an armistice, bringing the fighting of the Korean War to an end. The armistice ended America’s first experiment with the Cold War concept of “limited war.”

What were the factors that led the Chinese to decide that they had to enter the war on behalf of North Korea? It has been generally accepted in the west that the Chinese were motivated by a combination of Chinese xenophobic attitudes, security concerns, expansionist tendencies and the communist ideology.

According to the American estimates, about 920,000 Chinese soldiers had been killed or wounded during the war. After they add North Korea’s casualties to this number, the Americans believed that the Chinese and North Koreans suffered a total of 1.42 to 1.5 million casualties.
137 sailors of the Baltic Fleet were awarded a title of the Hero of the Soviet Union. For most of the war the fleet was trapped by German and Finnish minefields in Leningrad and nearby Kronstadt, the only bases left in Soviet hands on the Baltic coast.
World War II devastated not just Japan, but the Korean Peninsula, and in 1945, the United States and the USSR captured the peninsula and ended Japanese rule there. Korea was divided into two occupation zones that were intended to be temporary.
