MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) -Today the list of hurricane names consist of both men and women names but this wasn’t always the case. From approximately 1953 to 1979, U.S. tropical systems were only named after women. The U.S. decided in the early 1950s, that only used female names would be used for tropical systems.
Archival press clips show that men believed “people would not take storms seriously if names did not evoke images of female fury,” The Washington Post reported. Weathermen were said to have chosen the names of their (ex-) wives or girlfriends to conjure that kind of rage, at least in their own heads.

At the beginning of the season, NOAA predicted 13-20 named storms and 6-10 hurricanes. They also projected 3-5 major hurricanes (hurricanes of category 3 strength or stronger). Scientists at NOAA said there was a 60% chance that Hurricane Season 2021 would feature above-normal activity.
NOAA’s updated forecast, also from early August, said 15 to 21 tropical storms would form, of which seven to 10 would be hurricanes. Leading hurricane forecasts from AccuWeather and Weather.com agree that 2021 will experience higher-than-normal activity.
