BERLIN: Kadir Nurman, the man largely credited with inventing the doner kebab, also known as shawarma, has died in Berlin aged 80. Nurman was born in Istanbul, Turkey before moving to Stuttgart, Germany at the age of 26.
Historically, the doner kebab can be considered the ancestor of the gyros and shawarma. Shaved from a large meat cone that slowly turns and roasts all day, this meat was very popular in the Ottoman Empire (also Turkish Empire, 1299 – 1923).
