Some overseas factories did shut down for a time, and shipping is way up in general for tons of products, but with the bike shortage, it’s mostly a surge in demand that has overwhelmed factories.
COVID and an unexpected surge in demand have been major factors in causing the best of times and worst of times for bikes and component sales. Components are back-ordered, and there are massive lag times for most new bike deliveries. Some parts are more than a year away from being shipped to customers.

Bikes are like cars: New models arrive on the bike-shop sales floor each year, typically in the fall as the riding season winds down. This is the best time to look for deals, because shops don’t want soon-to-be-year-old inventory lingering through the slower winter months.
In regions with a cooler off-season, there will likely be bike shops selling bikes at a discounted price, since they don’t move as much stock when riding conditions aren’t as nice. But a pretty universal trend is for bike shops to mark down old model year bikes to help get rid of them and make room for new bikes.
