The lake filled quickly one year after its construction, and left once booming communities submerged under it’s waters. The town of Hagerman was named after James P. Hagerman, a local railroad attorney. The town held about 250 residents and was built along the old Katy Railroad.
Even though a 3-foot sand shart was found near the beach on the Texas side of Lake Texoma back in 1988, there were no sharks in the lake. It is highly unlikely that any saltwater species of fish would survive in Lake Texoma.

A man-made lake, Texoma was created in 1944 to control flooding and is formed by the Denison Dam and the Red River. In the 21st century, however, it is primarily known as a premier recreation destination.
Angling Opportunities
Flows in the Red and Washita Rivers make Texoma one of the few freshwater lakes in the United States with a self-sustaining, landlocked population of striped bass. A dozen other Texas lakes support striped bass fisheries; however, routine stocking is required to maintain those populations.
Lake Texoma, a reservoir on the border between the U.S. states of Texas and Oklahoma, is a rare example of a brackish lake that is neither part of an endorheic basin nor a direct arm of the ocean, though its salinity is considerably lower than that of the other bodies of water mentioned here.

Lake Texoma offers numerous coves to swim in on the Oklahoma and Texas side of the lake. Deeper lake swimming is also an option off the boat side in different locations of the lake waters. Although cove swimming provides a better experience away from lake traffic.

Striped bass good on live bait, live shad, sassy shad, shad, slabs, and on topwater below the dam and around the main lake and points. Striped bass and catfish are biting well below Denison Dam. Striped bass are hitting artificial and live/cut bait during early mornings and late evening.

For striped bass and hybrid striped bass, there is no minimum length limit. Daily bag limit = 10; possession limit = 20, and only two striped or hybrid striped bass 20 inches or greater may be retained each day. Culling of striped bass and hybrid striped bass is prohibited.
In Texoma, you can find Copperheads, Cottonmouths, and sometimes Timber Rattlesnakes. “This happens to be good habitat for them up around Lake Texoma. The Hagerman Wildlife Refuge has some,” said Roney. But most of the snakes you may find in your backyard are harmless.
