5 — Steely Dan is the name of a sex toy. The name was taken from a strap-on-dildo, named Steely Dan III from Yokohama, that was mentioned in William S. Burroughs’ novel Naked Lunch. Steely Dan found inspiration for their band name in the pages of beat writer William S. Burroughs’s novel Naked Lunch.
“Steely Dan” is a reference to William S. Burroughs’ 1959 novel Naked Lunch, a book I’ll admit to reading but not actually understanding. In Naked Lunch, “Steely Dan III from Yokohama” is a steam-powered dildo, which is not really something that comes to mind when listening to “Reelin’ In The Years.”
As has been noted, Burroughs could have been anywhere. His rationale for being in Tangier had to do with “invisibility,” and as he wrote to Ginsberg, some features of this locale had a Mexico City familiarity.
1985: Gilmour becomes band leader. In 1985, Waters declared that Pink Floyd were “a spent force creatively” and left the band. Gilmour and Mason responded with a press release stating that they intended to continue without him.

“Naked Lunch” is one the most recent banned books in America. In 1962 it was banned in Boston for obscenity and in 1966 the Massachusets Supreme court reversed the decision with the help of testimony by Norman Mailer and Allen Ginsberg.
The composition of Naked Lunch has its origins in what Burroughs called “routines”, surreal sketches which were included in letters to Allen Ginsberg. As the pages piled up on the floor around his desk, some soiled by footprints, Burroughs saw a book taking shape.
PAUL BOWLES: BEATS, BURROUGHS, BRION GYSIN, GINSBERG, GORE VIDAL. Although Paul Bowles was loathe to be considered a Beat writer and not particularly an admirer of the Beats’ writings, he did inspire several of the major Beat Generation writers including Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs to go to Morocco.
In spring of 1997, about two and a half years before he died in 1999, I spent an hour talking with Bowles in his Tangier, Morocco apartment. The building where he lived in the ville nouvelle (the comparatively new section of town, outside the walls of the medina, or ville ancienne) was gray and nondescript.
Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote — they all traveled here in the 1950s and 1960s. Many came to see Bowles, the composer and author of “The Sheltering Sky,” who lived in Tangier for more than 50 years until his death in 1999.
Reedited by Burroughs scholar Barry Miles and Burroughs’s longtime editor James Grauerholz, Naked Lunch: The Restored Text includes many editorial corrections to errors present in previous editions, and incorporates Burroughs’s notes on the text, several essays he wrote over the years about the book, and an appendix of …
