Disposable surgical masks are about 7” x 3.875” inches (not expanded) and 7” x 7” inches (expanded). Our size S/M face masks are 7.5” x 4.5” inches.
Cut the fabric. For an adult size mask, cut 1 fabric rectangle 16″ long and 8.5″ wide. Cut 2 pieces of elastic, each 7″ long. Or, cut 4 fabric ties 18″ long.
Small: 6.5 inches b. Medium: 7 inches c. Large: 7.5 inches 3.
|Sizes||Mask Dimensions||Fit Notes|
|XS||5.5 inches||Fits most Keiki and teens|
|S||6 inches||Fits most women|
|M||6.5 inches||Fits most men|
|L||7 inches||Fits most men|
One adult mask requires two (2) 9”x6” pieces tight-weave cotton and two 7” pieces of 1/4 inch elastic. Therefore, one yard of 44” wide fabric yields 12-15 masks. You need 7.5 yards of elastic for 25 masks (14 inches per mask). You can make two sizes: Adult or Child.
Here are the measurements for a child’s face mask based on two different age groups, and the printable patterns for both can be found here. Ages 2-6: 8″ x 6″ fabric, with 5″ elastics. Ages 7-14: 8.5″ x 6.5″ fabric, with 5.5″ elastics.
Combine 1/2 cup hot—not boiling—water and 1/3 cup oatmeal. After the water and oatmeal have settled for two or three minutes, mix in 2 tablespoons plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons honey, and one small egg white. Apply a thin layer of the mask to your face, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Then rinse with warm water.
The N95 size M/L is the standard size respirator, and the Small is a slightly smaller, more fitted version for smaller face shapes. If you’re having difficulty choosing which shape is best for you, measure from the middle of the bridge of your nose, to the bottom of your chin with a soft measuring tape.
N95 respirators made by different companies were found to have different filtration efficiencies for the most penetrating particle size (0.1 to 0.3 micron), but all were at least 95% efficient at that size for NaCl particles.
You should have marked your fabric with the pleats of each side. Reference the template for the arrow direction because all pleats need to go in the same direction. Pleats are 1” apart with a 1⁄2” gap in-between and the markings start 3⁄4” down from the seam. Tuck pleats down from top to bottom.
Fold three pleats in the mask as shown on the CDC pattern below and sew each side of the mask to hold the pleats. Metal rod should be at the top of the mask and three pleats should fold down from the top.
Remember that all three pleats need to face the same direction. So if you’re stitching along the edges on a sewing machine, you’ll be stitching upwards facing pleats on one side and then downward on the other – because you flip the fabric around to stitch. They will all face the same way across the mask.Apr 13, 2020
(A) Measure from the top of the nose to underneath the chin. This measurement will be the height of your mask. (B) Measure from the top of the nose to the side of the face, stopping just before the ear. Double this measurement to get the width of your mask.
1 Cut squares of two ply 00% cotton fabric to appropriate size. 2 Cut ear loops (5–7 inches depending on stretch of fabric). 3 Place loop ends between the two layers of fabric. 4 Form two pleats as pictured.
3M Particulate Respirator 8110S is a small size version similar to our classic 8210, N95, which is a NIOSH approved disposable particulate respirator that helps provide reliable respiratory protection of at least 95% filtration efficiency against certain non-oil based particles.
