In areas of low vegetation, when exposed to direct sunlight, the rocks that comprise riprap can reflect light into the water, which increases water temperatures to an unhealthy degree for fish. Riprap also tends to suffer from structural integrity issues during and after high-water events.
Place a layer of filter fabric over on top of the exposed slope to prevent soil movement under the riprap. If filter fabric is used, it should be followed by a three inch thick layer of clean three fourths (3/4) inch crushed stone.
Riprap should be placed on a proper filter material of sand, gravel, or fabric to prevent soil from “piping” through the stone.
