Living room rugs are often the most prominent home decor accessories. A common rug size for living room spaces is 9′ x 12′. However, the size of the rug you select depends on both your furniture arrangement and the size of the room.

A rug adds a new dimension and a pop of style to almost any room it finds itself in. If you have a room that is an 11’x13′ or smaller sized one, a 6’x’9′ rug could be just the thing it is missing.
The most common rug sizes are 3’x5′, 5’x8′, 8’x10′, 9’x12′ and 12’x15′. Let’s look at how different-sized rugs can complement the furniture and decor in each room of your house. We’ll also look at how to measure floors and determine the right size rugs for the set-up in your home.
Typical living room rug sizes are 8’x10′ and 9’x12′. Make sure your rug is at least 6″ wider (8″ is ideal) than your sofa on both sides. Typically run the rug the length of the sofa. Give 30″ to 36″ of a walkway between large furniture pieces (if your living room allows for it) if not then at least 18″-24″.

Run the rug the length of the biggest sofa piece and give 30 to 36 inches of walkway between the larger furniture pieces if your space allows for it. If your living room is small, leave at least 18 to 24 inches of space. That should help you inform your decision when choosing rug size.

An area rug should be wider than the couch with a foot of space on either side showing. An area rug should have a minimum of 18″ of space around where the bare floor shows. The front legs of the couch and any accent chairs should be on the rug. All legs of a couch and accompanying furniture should be on the rug.
Make sure the rug is sufficiently big enough.
Ideally, your dining room rug should be about four feet longer and wider than your table. You need 18 to 24 inches on each side so you and your guests can slide chairs out without worrying about falling off the edge of the rug.
A good rule of thumb to follow is that a rug should extend 12 to 18 inches beyond the furniture it’s underneath. In a sofa and chair grouping, this means the rug should extend 12 to 18 inches beyond the ends of the sofa. In a dining room, the rug should extend that far beyond the back legs of the dining room chairs.
13′ x 21′
The largest, pre-made area rug you can purchase from PlushRugs.com is 13′ x 21′. Anything larger than 13’x21′ would have be custom made and this makes your rug purchase an expensive endeavor.
Size. You may feel as though choosing a rug size for a nursery can be difficult, however, the most common size for a nursery rug is 5’x8′, which looks nice placed alongside the crib. That being said, most people use between a 5×8 and a 9×12 in their living rooms. Since standard queen beds are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, your rug should be at least 8 feet long. If you have an Olympic queen bed, which is a non-standard queen bed that is 66 inches wide, your rug should be at least 9 feet long.
King Bed: -Leave at least 8” of space from the nightstands to the beginning of the rug. -Make sure the rug extends the bed by at least 1 foot. -Typical rug size for a King bed is 9×12.
You should start with your furniture and especially the couch, as they will dictate the size and style of rug needed and are the major investments that are not easily changed. Then look for tables, etc to suit and it’s then easier to coordinate the smaller things – rug, pillows, drapery.
