Jimmy Lee was just one of four siblings Saadiq has lost. His brother, Desmond, also an addict, died by suicide. “My other brother, lvy, was murdered by my sister’s boyfriend when I was 7, and then my sister was in a car accident … and I always just kept progressing and moving forward, you know,” he said.
“Sons of Soul” yielded the Tonys’ biggest hit, the rollicking “If I Had No Loot.” Saadiq said he effectively left the band after that, although they made one more album together in 1996. He wasn’t, as he put it, “trying to be Bobby Brown or something” when he left. He hoped to go broader, not bigger.
