There’s no limit to how many you can buy, but your “total moons” count (as appearing on the sail of the Odyssey) is capped at 999.
After post-game, every shop will start selling infinite amounts of moons. Any moons you buy from the shop will NOT make ANY moons unattainable and will make the collected moon the same “shopping in X” except on the moon list, next to its name, it will display the total amount of moons you have bought from that store.
There are 74 total Power Moons and 100 Purple Coins in the Wooded Kingdom.
Up until you defeat the final story mission boss on the final planet, every kingdom has one moon ready for you to buy. Simply run your way to the nearest shop to purchase one moon for 100 gold coins, which will slightly help you on your journey to collect all the Moons in the game (FYI, there’s a lot of them).

No, there is no limit. You can do this at any store that sells these as well, giving you more power moons than you would ordinarily find in game. I suspect this exists to offset the harder-to-find power moons, giving you the ability to keep exploring post-game content without having to find every power moon.
Collecting 250 Power Moons unlocks the Dark Side, and collecting 500 Power Moons unlocks the Darker Side.

A total completion of the game involves collecting all 999 Power Moons, finding all 1,000 purple coins, and earning enough gold coins to purchase each of the 40 outfits for Mario and 26 items for the ship. According to How Long To Beat, this takes an average of 61.5 hours. That is an odyssey indeed!
Nothing much happens. You still get back to the same spot if you had any coins to lose. But since players can earn a lot of coins in the game, it’s highly unlikely that most players will ever run out. It definitely takes some of the challenge out of the game.
