Things You’ll Need
If you cover a mahogany surface with paint, the tannins will gradually bleed through. Fortunately, the right painting procedure eliminates tannin discoloration for a bright, durable finish. With proper cleaning and priming, virtually anybody can paint mahogany wood with professional results.
“Traditional and Classic Furniture is coming back.” Due to the pandemic, furniture and home decorating trends have shifted away from the simplicity and sleekness of modern for a return to comfort and coziness and furniture that lasts a lifetime and isn’t replaced half a dozen times.
Use the A/B 2 part wood bleach sets found in better paint stores. You will need to COMPLETELY strip and sand off every bit of the existing finish, then apply the bleach. The mahogany will lighten a lot to a pale straw color.
If you try to apply a light color of stain over the top of an existing dark finish, you won’t notice much difference. To completely alter the color of the finish, strip down the existing stain using a petroleum-based solvent. Once you’ve lightened the wood, you may add a lighter color of stain.
Combine equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the vinegar onto the mahogany surface and rub it in with a soft cloth or chamois cloth. The vinegar cuts through any oil or old wax on the surface and brings out the natural luster of the wood.
It is not necessary to sand down to the bare wood. Remove the sanding dust using a clean, damp cloth. Sand the wood again using 220-grit sandpaper to ensure a smooth surface.
