Measuring your bust will help determine the best lingerie size for you. The fullest part of your hips is usually about 8″ below your natural waist (this may fluctuate from 6″ to 9″ depending on your height. The torso measurement is especially important when trying to find your size in bodysuits and teddies.
Size | Hips (inches) | Pant Size |
---|---|---|
4/XS | 34 – 35 | 2 – 4 |
5/S | 36 – 37 | 4 – 6 |
6/M | 38 – 39 | 8 – 10 |
7/L | 40 – 41 | 12 – 14 |
Traditional bra sizes are a combination of letters and numbers. The number portion of the size (the 34 in 34C for example) represents your band size or the measurement around your rib cage just below your breasts. To get this number pull a soft measuring tape tightly around the bottom of your bra band while wearing it.
Size | Bra Size |
---|---|
Medium | 36B,34C, 34D |
Large | 34DD, 36C, 36D, 38B |
X-Large | 36DD, 38C, 38D, 38DD, 40B |
2X Large | 40C, 40D, 40DD, 42B, 42C, 42D, 42DD |
Bra band size
When bra sizes were first conceived in the 1930s, the materials used for bras were a lot stiffer and less flexible – women were only just out of corsets – so manufacturers used to recommend adding 4 inches to your actual size to get the correct band size.
Cup Size: | Difference: |
---|---|
A Cup | 1 inch |
B Cup | 2 inch |
C Cup | 3 inch |
D Cup | 4 inch |
Measurement | Cup size | |
---|---|---|
inch | cm | |
10.0 | 25.4 | D |
10.5 | 26.7 | D |
11.0 | 27.9 | DD |
It’s important to ensure there’s no gaping at the cup and that the band is snug against your back as the majority of support comes from the band. “Don’t stress about your measured size. Wear what feels best on you; it will look the best on you, I promise.”
You Should Be Able To Fit Two Fingers Beneath The Band
A well-fitting bra will allow you wiggle room. If you can’t comfortably fit two fingers beneath the band, it’s too tight.
The measuring tape should be level and very snug. Round to the nearest whole number. If the number is even, add four inches. If it’s odd, add five.
Proper cup fit is influenced by band size. As the band size changes, so does the cup size. For every band size you go down, you should go up one cup. If you are in a 34D with a good cup fit, but want to go down to a 32 band, you would go to a 32DD for a tighter band with the same cup fit.
The number is the band size, which is just inches around. Even someone who didn’t have breasts would have a band size. A 32 would be small and a 38 would be big. Usually women are a 34 or 36 on average.
Cup sizes are related to body sizes – they are NOT constant across body size. eg. If you are a 12B but would prefer a firmer fit, then the swing size is 10C (Which has the same cup capacity as the 12B but a smaller band size).
The cup size, however, is the difference between your band size and your bust size. … If your bust size is less than 1 inch bigger than your band size, you’re a cup size AA. 1-inch difference = A. 2-inch difference = B.
Size | Bra Size |
---|---|
Small | 36A,34B |
Medium | 36B,34C, 34D |
Large | 34DD, 36C, 36D, 38B |
X-Large | 36DD, 38C, 38D, 38DD, 40B |
There is a difference of between 2cm and 2.54cm (depending on where you shop) between each cup size, so an AA is an inch smaller than A and DD is an inch bigger than D.
D CUP | 34 D | 48 D |
---|---|---|
Bust measurement (in inches) | 36.6 – 37.4 | 50.4 – 51.2 |
Under the bust measurement (in inches) | 29 – 30 | 43 – 44 |
If your breasts are spilling out of the bra cup, you’re not wearing the correct size. Similar to side overflow, cup overflow is easy to fix: trade-in for a bigger cup size and give your breasts some much-needed breathing room! If you’re a 34B, trade up a half-size to 34B ½ or a whole cup size to 34C if you need it.
When there is compression of blood vessels, blood goes on collecting around compressed area leading to odema or swelling of that area, which go on increasing as day passes, because of this as day passes bra becomes tighter and even painful if compression is more or for longer time.
It was designed as a method for measuring way back in the 1950s when bras were made from silk and satin and did not stretch. The 4 inches extra allowed breathing room, something which in 2015 is completely redundant as all bras now have elastic and stretch in them.
The 34 is a bigger band size than a 32. Another example, a 34B and 36A are the same cup size. The only difference is the band size.
This means that a 34AA is in fact a AA cup, just as how a 34B is a true B cup. However, a 34B is also equivalent in cup volume to a 30D, 32C, and a 36A. All three aforementioned sizes are a B cup despite what their cup letter indicates.
The next sister size to a 34C is a 36B, which is the new size to try instead. The cups will still be the same size, but the band will be roomier.
36 BAND SIZE | ||
---|---|---|
Current Bra Size | Sister Size DOWN | Sister Size UP |
36A | 34B | 38AA |
36B | 34C | 38A |
36C | 34D | 38B |
You may be hesitant about going up a size in your jeans, but when it comes to finding the right bra, sometimes bigger can fit better. … For example, a 36C is the same cup size as a 34D and 32DD. This is because as the back size, or the number, gets smaller, the difference between your back and bust increases.
Try a smaller body size and possibly a larger cup size (eg 12B becomes 10C). Try racerback styles or styles with wider, more substantial straps. Understanding the way bra sizes work allows you to manipulate sizes to get the best fit.
