Instead of putting water to freeze, use washable tempura liquid paint to fill the ice cube tray holes. Squirt paints of different colors into the holes of an ice tray. Place the ice cube tray in the freezer. Freeze for about thirty minutes, just to begin to harden the cubes.

Mix an equal amount of Epsom salt in with the water. I did 1/2 cup water to 1/2 cup salt. Mix well then add a couple drops of food coloring to create the desired color. OR leave colorless (and completely mess free!) and paint onto the dark paper.
White powdered paint is mixed with water in a large tank creating a liquid paint mix. This paint is then applied to the ice surface with a large 12-foot spray boom and a pump. Two to three coats are applied to cover the surface. This is then sealed in with fine water spray, which freezes.
Just using a can of spray that makes dry ice will not work, either. Though the cooling effect when using a can of spray has the same physical reason, rapid drop in pressure. In scientific terms, adiabatic expansion.
Real “artificial ice” does exist, made of polymers treated with a lubricant. Ice skates can be used but of course you can’t get that great spray of ice particles when stopping. Interestingly, these artificial surfaces are also treated with titanium dioxide to make them white.

Ice painting is a great outdoor activity for kids to engage in. It allows exploration of temperature, texture and art. All that is needed for this art project is an ice cube tray, tempera paint, popsicle sticks, and paper. … To prepare for this, I poured tempera paint in ice cube trays and put them in the freezer.

Try the Calth Blue Clear, in the air range. The finish is glossier than the glazes but otherwise the “Clear” colors are pretty much a straight up replacement for them. But now on top of blue, green, yellow and red there’s also purple, orange, and a dark/smoke color. (And they’re perfectly fine for brush use of course.)
Acrylic paints, mediums and varnishes should not be allowed to freeze. They become lumpy or rubbery and as such are not usable. Oils polymerise fine in cold weather.
Can Paint that has been frozen be used after it thaws? Associate Director of R&D and PPG Paint Specialist: Once the paint has thawed completely, mix thoroughly to ensure a consistent consistency. As long as the paint is not clumpy and doesn’t have a foul odor, it is usable.
