Built in limited numbers—about 17,000 or so, with 80 percent of those produced in 1990—the Chevrolet 454 SS pickup arrived before the 1991 GMC Syclone pickup and 1992–93 GMC Typhoon SUV. The compact GMC performance trucks are rarer and faster, however, meaning they’re also more sought after and much more expensive.Jul 3, 2019
It only came in one color combo that first year — black with red interior — but later there were white and red variants that were also popular. They were also so rare that they became a valued commodity.
Given the fact that the 454 SS was produced for just four model years, production capped out around 17,000 units. As a result, this picture-perfect pickup is also exceedingly rare. While most owners took care of their beloved Chevys, perhaps none looked after (or neglected, you be the judge) them as much as this guy.
The Chevy 454 SS pickup truck was produced between 1990 and 1993. This pickup truck is a full-size, high-performance vehicle fitted with a powerful engine. All Chevy SS 454 pickups rolled off the assembly lines in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
SS,” by the way, stands for “Super Sport.”
Chevrolet produced roughly 13,748 Silverado 454 SS trucks for the 1990 model year with a base price of $18,295.

The SS 454 was named this as it was powered by a 454-cubic inch, 7.4-liter engine, which produced 230 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 385 foot-pounds of torque at 1,600 rpm. The engine had a bore (cylinder width) of 4.25 inches and a stroke (piston travel inside the cylinder) of 4 inches. The compression ratio was 7.9:1.
The most paid for a Chevrolet 454 SS was $40,700 for a 1990 model at Mecum’s 2019 Kissimmee Auction. Newton says the Chevy pickup is following a market path similar to that of the Syclone, which nearly doubled in value in a short period in 2016 and is now worth 111 percent more than it was five years ago.
Surprisingly, the 454 laid down an impressive 330 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. Naturally, the truck-based 454s were tuned for torque, so having nearly 500 pound-feet wasn’t a big surprise. But like any stock engine, there was tons of power left to be squeezed out.
The Chevrolet 454 was eliminated from most passenger cars by 1975 but remained a viable powerplant in heavy-duty Chevrolet trucks through 1996.

Like the platypus, the Chevy SS is a pretty rare sight. Despite plans to sell as many as 15,000 units a year, GM unloaded only a fifth of that number, or about 13,000 total over its four-year run (2014-2017).

The 454 is a big-block carbureted engine found in most older model Chevrolet cars and trucks. The engine uses eight cylinders to provide high-end torque and speeds. The combination of larger bore and eight cylinders equates to very poor gas mileage. The engine runs an average of 10 to 15 mpg.
Throughout its production and until its final days found under the hood of GM trucks, the Chevy 454 was also a staple of drag cars across the nation and remains so to this day. You can still purchase a 454 big-block V8 crate engine from Chevy themselves, which only confirms its firmly planted legacy.
The 6.0 is a LS engine, but in actuality it is a small block.
