Originally Answered: How long were the events of the Hobbit and lord of the rings? TL; DR: Frodo and Sam’s journey from The Shire to Mordor took 6 months, but three months were spent in Rivendell and Lorien. So their actual travel time was about three months. Frodo left Bag End on September 23, Third Age 3018.
It began in September TA 3018 when Frodo set out for Rivendell, which he finally reached on October 20. From there it took five months until the One Ring and Sauron were finally destroyed on March 25 of TA 3019. In total, it took 11 months, one week, and six days for the One Ring to be destroyed.
On T.A. 3019, March 25, when Gollum bites off Frodo’s finger, the ring is finally destroyed when it falls into the fires of the mountain. From leaving The Shire, it took the two hobbits six months to complete their quest.
Gandalf invites Bilbo on an “adventure” In the year TA 2941, Bilbo, at the age of 50, was visited by Gandalf, whom he had not seen for quite some time, outside his home at Bag End.
Technically, Frodo and Sam left the Shire on the morning of September 26, and went into Mordor on the night of the 13th of March. Each month in the Shire Calendar has 30 days, so that would be 168 days. As for the journey from Bag End to Mt. Doom, that would add 15 days, for a total of 183 days.
Gandalf began to suspect the Ring was more than it seemed only on the night of Bilbo’s party. Bilbo’s behavior that night concerned him. So he didn’t stay in the Shire for 17 years, he LEFT the shire for 17 years (after cautioning Frodo not to use the Ring, and to keep it secret and safe).
Bilbo seems to have aged some after he gives the ring up to Frodo (he tells Frodo, “I am getting old”), but it isn’t until the Ring is destroyed that his age really catches up to him. Gollum had the Ring much longer than Bilbo, so its hold on him, including its effect on his lifespan, was stronger.
Gollum had the ring in his possession for 478 years, and continued to lived for an additional 78 years until the ring’s ultimate destruction in T.A. 3019. Meaning that he was alive for close to 600 years (6 times the average lifespan of a hobbit).
The departure of the quest for Erebor
After 640 km of walking in 40 days, they arrived at Rivendell to meet Elrond. Current statistics: 640 km in 40 days, minus the day of being lost due to the Trolls.
Over the next 17 years, Gandalf travels extensively, searching for answers on the ring. He finds some answers in Isildur’s scroll, in the archives of Minas Tirith. He also wants to question Gollum, who had borne the ring for many years. Gandalf searches long and hard for Gollum, and often has the assistance of Aragorn.
The Fellowship of the Ring: 3.4 hours. The Two Towers: 3.7 hours. The Return of the King: 4.1 hours. Total: 11.2 hours.
The start of Bilbo’s journey is in 2941, according to ‘The Hobbit’ just before May; he is 50 years old. He returns next year (2942), on June the 22nd (in the middle of an auction selling his property) and is 51 years old. Bilbo’s farewell feast is on his/their birthday in 3001; he is 111 years old, and Frodo 33.
Bilba Labingi, the original Hobbitish name for “Bilbo Baggins”.
Gandalf didn’t begin to suspect it was the One Ring until he saw that Bilbo both wasn’t noticeably aging even after years and decades and was obviously obsessed with the Ring as if by magical compulsion. He knew for sure only once the Ring was tested in the hearth at Bagend revealing the writing on it.
Gandalf the White. Gandalf’s body lay on the peak for nineteen days, until he was resurrected by Eru and sent back to Middle-earth alive to complete his task.

The name Frodo Baggins is an English translation of his Westron name Maura Labingi. The name Maura has the element maur- (wise, experienced), which Tolkien equated to the Germanic element frod- of the same meaning.
When, despairing of his ability to destroy the Ring, Frodo offers it to Gandalf, the wizard immediately refuses because he recognizes the danger: “the way of the Ring to my heart is through pity, pity for weakness and the desire of strength to do good.” Because the Ring is evil, the wizard knows that any attempt to …
Frodo volunteers to leave Shire on the 13th of April TA 3018, but he leaves for his fake new home 22nd of September. They reach Mount Doom and destroy the Ring on the 25th of March the following year. It takes them six months, give or take a few days. They take another six months going back to Shire.
In a prologue to The Lord Of The Rings, he wrote that Hobbits are between two and four feet tall, the average height being three feet six inches.
