The long jump is measured from the takeoff board to the nearest mark in the sand. You should therefore always try to fall forward when you land and walk out of the front of the pit. If you fall or walk backward, your jump will be measured from that shorter distance.

I think 10 to 12 feet is probably average for someone with a reasonable but not all-consuming interest in the event. 14 feet would be pretty good. 16 and over would be very good if not excellent. Important thing is work on improving.

The Long Jump is an action of a single jump preceded by a run-up. The jump is made by the athlete placing the take off foot on the mat and landing in the pit, usually on both feet. Each athlete is entitled to 3 jumps the best of which is recorded as the jump. No jumps are included in the three jumps.
The record for the longest-held Olympic best is held by Bob Beamon (USA) – he achieved 8.90m in the men’s long jump at the 1968 Mexico City games.
