Essos is the largest of the four known continents in the world. It lies east of Westeros and north of Sothoryos and Ulthos, stretching from the Shivering Sea in the north to the Summer Sea in the south, and from the narrow sea in the west to the lands surrounding the Jade Sea in the east, if not farther.
It represents all of Europe, from Scandinavia (The North) to Spain (as Dorne). The political events are taken from England’s history, but the geography and history are bigger than that. Essos is very clearly Asia. The farthest east lands are modeled after China.
The Doom of Valyria (100 BC)
A group of powerful families in the Valyrian freehold ruled over the continent of Essos for nearly 5000 years, thanks to their dragons.
It’s relatively narrow at around 900 miles wide – that’s about the distance from John O’Groats to Lands End (in United Kingdom).
Westeros was England, flipped horizontally and increased in size to the size of South America. Essos, just across the English Channel ERR “Narrow Sea”, is based on Europe.
It is located in a mountain valley in the peaks of the Frostfangs. a massive wall over 700 feet high and is made of ice, stretching 300 miles across the northern border of Westeros, separating it from the wild lands beyond.
Valyria was the capital city of the once-great civilization known as the Valyrian Freehold. The city of Valyria is located on the eastern continent of Essos, southeast of the Free Cities, on the Valyrian Peninsula, a large peninsula extending southwards into the Summer Sea.
Origins and relocation. House Targaryen was one of the forty ancient noble houses known as dragonlords who ruled the Valyrian Freehold, a great empire spanning much of Essos. The Targaryens were not one of the most powerful houses, however.
Asshai is the largest, geographically. Volantis is likely the most populous metropolitan city, said to be similar to King’s Landing. Other contenders would be Braavos and Lys.
In the world of Game of Thrones Essos seems like a bigger continent and a more beautiful and warmer place with a thriving economy and a diverse cultural and ethnic diaspora. In comparison, Westeros seems much more dry and cold with a poor economy due to the harsh winters and the instability of its rulership.

The Valyrian languages are a fictional language family in the A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, and in their television adaptation Game of Thrones.
As the Reach is the heartland of chivalry and knighthood in Westeros, has a fully developed culture of sophisticated manners, and is highly fertile, it seems to be loosely based on medieval France.

The Doom of Valyria as artistically depicted in the title sequence of Game of Thrones, with a rearing dragon against the backdrop of a volcano and a burning city. The Doom occurred in exactly the year 114 BC, 112 years before the Targaryen conquest of Westeros began in 2 BC.
Game of Thrones is one of the most popular TV shows of all time. … That being said, both George RR Martin and the Game of Thrones showrunners were clearly inspired by real-world events when constructing their plots. Several characters, locations, and events have clear parallels in the real world.
